07 October 2009 A coa 14/10/2009
07 October 2009

A coalition of aviation representatives, including BAA Stansted, has launched an initiative to cut aircraft noise, emissions and improve local air quality at airports.

The new Departures Code of Practice promotes how aircraft can taxi to and from the runway with less than all engines operating, leading to significant reductions in ground noise, CO2 and NOx emissions, depending on aircraft type and operator techniques.

Welcoming the publication of the new guidance, Dr Andy Jefferson, Stansted Airport’s head of environment, said:

“It's really great news that a new interim departures code of practice has been agreed. I'm particularly delighted as we have helped lead the trialling of this new technique here at Stansted, working very closely with easyJet, so it's very pleasing to see all our hard work coming to fruition.

“We have already enjoyed significant success with a similar collaborative approach when we developed and subsequently updated the arrivals code of practice, which has led to the introduction of continuous descent approaches at Stansted. I believe this next step will help build on that excellent work, maintain our forward momentum and is further evidence of our commitment to explore new and innovative ways to address the industry's environmental impacts.

“I also believe the collaborative approach the aviation industry has adopted is the best and most practical way forward. Working together as an industry, we are all able to fully focus on the wide range of issues and challenges the sector faces as we look to satisfy future passenger demand for air travel while at the same time achieving our aim to reduce aircraft noise impacts and meet aviation's commitment is to reduce CO2 emissions from aircraft by 50% by 2050 compared to 2005 levels.

“To this end, and to fully utilise the experience and knowledge of all the local participants in the coalition, we’ve now established the Stansted Aircraft Emissions Working Group which has been tasked to determine how the Stansted airlines might best use the recommendations made in this code of practice.”

The Code has been produced by a group representing airlines, airports, air traffic control, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and ADS – the UK’s aerospace, defence and security trade body.

George Hutton, easyjet’s pilot manager at Stansted, said:

"easyJet has invested billions in the latest technology to make sure that we operate one of the cleanest, youngest and most fuel efficient fleets in the industry - the average age of our aircraft is just 3.4 years.

"We’ve been working in collaboration with Stansted Airport’s environment team for three years to explore noise and emissions saving strategies. As a result of this work, single-engine taxiing is now part of easyJet’s Standard Operating Procedures almost everywhere we fly to. Airlines adopting this procedure could see reductions in ground emissions of up to 30% and a taxi fuel saving of up to 40% depending on aircraft type and operator techniques."

BAA provides clarity on air quality information 18/02/2008

Updated research on air quality in support of the planning application for a second runway development at Stansted has made BAA’s technical team aware of the need to amend information on the Air Quality effects from the G1 development that was submitted to the recent G1 public inquiry.

The matter is not considered to make any difference to the merits of the case presented to the G1 inquiry, but BAA has acted quickly to ensure that the Secretaries of State, who are currently considering the independent planning inspector’s report, are informed.

Since the close of the G1 public inquiry, work on air quality assessments for G2 has had the benefit of more air quality data from nearby monitoring sites. This new data has enabled the technical team to update the air quality model which is used to predict future concentrations of emissions in the atmosphere and which formed the basis of the information which had been presented to the G1 planning inspector.

Latest air quality assessments have found that future background levels of Nitrous Oxide (NOx) in the atmosphere, to which those from forecast road traffic flows and aircraft movements are added, are now predicted to be slightly higher in future years than previously estimated. As a result of these increases in background levels, future NOx contours for 2014, both with and without the G1 proposals, now include small parts of both Hatfield Forest and Eastend Wood.

Stansted’s Planning and Business Development Director, Nick Barton said;

“As soon as we received the results of these latest air quality tests we decided to inform the Secretaries of State.

“We now predict that NOx levels are likely to be slightly higher in 2014 in parts of Hatfield Forest and East End Wood than were previously predicted. The levels in Hatfield Forest will still be less than those experienced today, and levels in Eastend Wood virtually the same. Added to which there is no evidence to show that any harm is or is likely to be occurring to vegetation. Significantly, no objectors at the G1 inquiry made the case that it would.

“This new air quality data does not diminish from the strong and compelling case we presented to the inquiry and we remain as confident as ever of a positive outcome.”

Campaigners say BAA 'wavering' on Stansted runway 10/02/2008

Campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) believes BAA is wavering over its second runway proposals at Stansted. The protest group claims that BAA's response to last month's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) consultation is the strongest sign yet that it is unsure of the viability of a second runway.

The consultation suggests that prices at Stansted Airport will continue to be regulated, with new caps possibly being introduced from April 2009. SSE believes that with caps in place, BAA will not be able to charge enough to make the cost of a second runway worthwhile.

When the consultation was announced, a BAA spokesman said: 'As the Secretary of State for Transport has acknowledged, the principal issue for airports in the South East is the timely delivery of new runway capacity, as outlined in the 2003 White Paper.'

'We will continue to argue strongly for a regulatory framework that delivers investments in new runway capacity at Stansted and Heathrow and we look forward to this consultation.'

In response to the statement, SSE's economics adviser, Brian Ross, said: 'This latest statement from BAA completely contradicts the message coming from BAA management at Stansted, namely that BAA is committed to the G2 [second runway] project. Either BAA is trying to bluff the CAA or it is not absolutely committed to a second runway.'

SSE says that it expected BAA to submit a planning application to Uttlesford District Council for a second runway at Stansted next month, but believes the application will be speculative rather than a genuine declaration of its intention to build. The group believes BAA is in no position to build a second runway because the company is in more than £12 billion debt, and may be seeking planning permission to increase the value of the airport in a potential sale.

Ryanair's rivals plan to cash in on website blackout 10/02/2008

Ryanair's rivals are reported to be planning to use a variety of seat-selling ploys to mark the three-day closure of Ryanair.com in two weeks time. The budget airline confirmed earlier reports yesterday that the site would be closed between February 23 to 25 to facilitate an 'essential systems upgrade'.

A spokeswoman refused to give any details of what this upgrade would involve, but it is understood to be related to the OFT's requirement that it quote all fares inclusive on non optional taxes and charges.

Ryanair has dismissed as 'rubbish' reports the closure could cost the airline as much as £23.5m. The figures were based on the airline losing 500,000 bookings at an average fare of £47.

A spokesman for the airline said: 'The figures are totally fabricated. We have already taken significant additional advance bookings - and will take more after the shutdown - which will ensure bookings, loads and financial results will be unaffected.'

However, aviation experts disagree. One said: 'They are closing the shop for three days. How can that not cost them anything?'

In addition, Irish rivals Aer Lingus and Aer Arann are understood to be planning to capitalise on the blackout by launching seat-selling initiatives of their own during the period. an executive at one of the airlines said: 'We haven't decided what we're going to do, but it looks like too good an opportunity for us to miss.' Other airlines including easyJet and Flybe are likely to seek to take advantage of the opportunity too.

Public inquiry 04/11/2007
Public inquiry hears summary of BAA's 'strong and compelling case' for growth19 October 2007

The five-month public inquiry into Stansted's planning application to grow the airport to 35 million passengers a year, ends today.

In an upbeat and comprehensive summary of the case Stansted has presented to the planning inspector, BAA's legal team highlighted the conclusive evidence given of the substantial economic and social benefits to be had if the proposed development is given the go-ahead. This includes the estimated 3,800 additional jobs that would be created and the tens of millions of pounds that would be generated into the local economy.

Special attention has been paid to the environmental consequences of increasing passenger numbers at the airport, and top UK QC Michael Humphries, BAA's leading counsel drew attention to the extensive range of measures proposed by BAA to control, manage and minimise the predicted impacts on the local environment.

Nick Barton, Stansted’s business development & planning director, said:

"This inquiry has examined in close detail the evidence we have presented to support the case for expansion. We now await the outcome of the Inspector’s report and the decision of the government, but we remain very confident of the strong and compelling case we have made.

"While we are not in the business of pre-judging the outcome of the independent inquiry, we know that success would bring benefits to those many millions of people who want to travel around the world on business and leisure trips. What is more, in the past five months we have demonstrated very clearly we can deliver that success in a sustainable and responsible way."

Notes to editors

This planning application relates to growth on Stansted’s existing single runway at Stansted - it has no connection to the proposals for a second runway at the airport
Stansted Airport has a number of planning condition limits, imposed in 2003 by Uttlesford District Council (UDC), which restrict the passengers numbers to 25 million passengers per annum (mppa) and the number of air transport movements (ATMs) to 241,000 per year.
The planning application is seeking permission to remove the cap on passenger numbers (Stansted is the only UK airport capped in this manner) and to increase the limit on ATMs to 264,000 a year.
It is not asking permission for any additional physical developments or facilities that do not currently have planning approval; nor is it seeking any modification to current night flight restrictions.
Stansted is the UK’s third busiest airport serving over 23.9 million passengers a year. It is expected the current permitted limit of 25 mppa will be reached in 2008

Airport Masterplan 15/03/2007
The Government has asked airport operators to prepare a master plan for the future of the airport.

Stansted’s master plan will be published in two stages:

First, in May 2006, Stansted Airport published its Interim master plan that deals with growth on Stansted's existing runway (the draft interim master plan was published in July 2005 and this coincided with an extensive pre-application public consultation on the proposed Generation 1 planning application.)

The second stage will be a Final master plan that will outline our strategy for growth on a two-runway airport up to 2030. Within the next few months a draft Final master plan will be published for consultation. This will take into account of our plans for a second runway development.

Interim master plan

Stansted Airport's Interim master plan focuses primarily on BAA's plans for development of the airport on the exisiting runway and the likely social, environmental and economic impact this will have.

New Airline at Stansted 28/06/2006
The third new service to arrive at Stansted this week will be the first direct connection to the Shetland Isles, previously only been accessible by complex air and ferry crossings.

“Excitement is growing as we near the launch date for this first ever direct link from Shetland
to London," said Atlantic Airways Sales & Marketing Director, Kent Christensen

“When we announced our intention to start this new route last November it provoked huge interest and this helped us to commit to extending our operation by two months to the end of October. We have sold close to 90 per cent of our seats in June and, with July flights already 75 per cent full, this is very encouraging.

“This will not only be an important link for the Shetland economy – it will also be a great boost for inbound tourism at a time when there's huge interest in Shetland because of the BBC's live daily coverage on its Springwatch programme."
